Ken's Kolumn
Does God shake the sea floor and cause a tidal wave that results in 160,000 deaths?
Does He manipulate a train track switch and cause a derailment that results in
tragedy? Does God shove weather systems around so that massive rain and floods
occur in unusual places? Does God give birth to viruses that invade our bodies and
cause sickness? Does God send illness and tragedy in order to accomplish His will on
earth? He certainly CAN do all these things, but DOES He? I don’t think so. These
things happen because of the natural laws God established when He created the
earth. They also happen because we live in a sin-cursed earth. Can God stop these
things from happening? Yes, and He often does. When He stops them we never hear
about it because there’s nothing to report. Maybe the key to understanding these
things lie in what Paul shared with the Corinthian believers. In this life and in this body
“…we groan…” (II Corinthians 5:2). The word “groan” means “to be in straits, to sigh,
murmur and pray inaudibly with grief .” Most things happen because we are humans
and as imperfect vessels we are susceptible to illness and tragedy. The key to living in
this world is what Paul records for us in the first verse of II Corinthians 5. It says, “For
we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building
of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” The Catoe paraphrase
is “We are confident that when our human body is demolished, we have a heavenly
body that is untouchable and that will live forever.” That heavenly body is the future of
everyone who has professed Jesus as their Savior and has followed Him in service. I
may not know what tomorrow has in store for me but I know that God is in tomorrow and
my eternity in heaven is guaranteed. Therefore, I can face tomorrow. Can You?
