The BARNWELL PASSION PLAY began in 1995 as another major
production of Barnwell, SC. This annual play has seen people from 8
His first miracle, His death, burial, resurrection, and even His Ascention
into heaven. James Cliver portrayed Jesus in the 1998 presentation
(pictured right). When the music, drama, and technical teams combine
forces for this event it numbers well over 100 people. The 1998 cast
members (pictured below) enthusiastically put much energy into this
multi county event. Much detail is put into the special effects. Full
costuming, Live flaming torches, over 10,000 watts of light power,
Smoke effects, an actual simulated Ascention, powerful songs, and
music interludes are just to name a few. Unlike theaters, The setting
here puts the audience right into the drama, because of the close view
and the drama spilling into the isles of the audience.

The Barnwell Passion Play at Hagood is one of only 4
venues that actually have an ascention during live
performance. Others simulate an ascention but this one is
unique. In 1997 one commentator asked, "How did you put
the image of Jesus on the wall and make it look like he
was ascending?" If not for the vision, planning, and wall to
some. Thanks to men and women with vision and
determination!
